Reducing Harm by Building Resilience

Helping people in prison learn self de-escalation skills in a safe, gamified way to reduce violence.

Emotional dysregulation is a key driver for violent reoffending.

How In-Person Therapy is Restricted in the Prison Setting

Only three hours of face-to-face clinical contact on average per year for incarcerated individuals with mild-to-moderate mental healthcare needs.

Low Reach

Building a trust-based relationship with a therapist is needed for talk therapy to be successful. This is more difficult in a low-trust environment with limited time.

Low Trust

Inaccessible

6/10 people in prison have low or basic literacy levels and struggle with language processing in talk therapy.

Manana Interactive’s stress management tool trains meditative, deep breathing while undertaking safe, gamified, emotion-inducing tasks. Data from a person’s wearable creates a positive, digital feedback loop, rewarding them for staying calm and focused when challenged.

A Data-Driven Intervention to Help Build Self-Calming Skills

Manana Interactive is conducting an in-prison pilot in 2024, with support from researchers at the University of Auckland.

“...such an innovative tool to help with the reintegration of those serving time in prison. It is such a critical opportunity to turn people’s lives around and help them become good citizens, and also to prevent more victims in our community.”

Anne Tolley, former Minister of Corrections commenting on Manana

Balancing Costs, Safety, and Rehabilitation

Globally, governments are grappling with the immense financial strain caused by growing prison populations, striving to balance public safety, security, and a humane response to crime. Correctional agencies are trialling many initiatives to cut costs while trying to maintain safety and improve reintegration.

The Principle of Normality is the leading concept in the development of national and international standards and guidelines to improve prisoner rights, wellbeing, and rehabilitation, leading to a reduction in the incarceration rate and creating safer prisons in the process. Central to this effort is leveraging digital transformation to alleviate the burden on prison staff, cut costs, and enhance existing rehabilitation programs.

Built in close collaboration with correctional professionals and international subject-matter experts, Manana is developing an evidence-based solution that teaches people how to better regulate their emotions, improving behavioural outcomes and wellbeing while reducing reoffending and creating safer prisons.
